Common Ground Campground was a super fun day. It was the first time I had gotten to bring my new camera to class, a Nikon 3200 purchased with the guiding knowledge of Dan Wells himself. Though I had taken it for a test drive around my house a few times, this was my first chance to play with it outside.
We had just experienced a rough snowstorm, and snow flakes still fell from the sky as we pulled into the parking lot. We got to meet the gracious owner of the grounds, who was kind enough to let his two dogs romp around in the woods with us for the day. He greeted us with a camera in our faces, snapping first a glamor shot in which everyone tried to smile, but he'd make a silly comment or call us out for being vain, and then snap the real shot; a real emotion, a real smile, a real laugh. I liked his style of making people feel uncomfortable but also entirely at home.
The woods were beautiful as well. Snow lingered on every branch and pine needle in the whole area. Classmates were becoming more comfortable with each other and played, climbing trees and making snowballs. I chose this day to focus on action shots. "Action" meaning things that generally move whether you want them to or not. One example being Miriam climbing a tree, another being the dogs who would just not sit still. But also the water. We came upon a beautiful stream, decorated with low hung branches straining under the weight of heavy snow. We played with shutter speeds and apertures, trying to get a hold on the camera settings. Overall it was a beautiful day.
